Mini Art Cards: Art-Wednesday
I am happy to announce that I have hatched a new Etsy shop artwork idea! I am currently (albeit slowly) creating a collection of miniature art cards! Each card will come with a matching patterned envelope, and will be part of a themed set of three.
To start, I will have the following themes: coast/ocean (pictured below), woodland animals, and flora. At 3" square, they can easily fit inside standard invitation envelopes for sending to friends, and will fit in pockets for surprise hand-delivery!
I look forward to releasing them on my Etsy shop soon! I will write here on my blog when they are as well.

Minecraft meets Appa: Fan Art-Tuesday
Today I found myself wanting to play Minecraft again! I have dabbled in making my own textures for the game pieces and today I decided to create a new texture for the cows. I love the game and Nickelodeon's "Avatar the Last Airbender", so why not have a farm of sky bison?
I am still working to make these guys perfect, but if you would like some sky bison of your own, today, you can go ahead and pop the texture map below into an existing custom resource pack!
To make this guy work, start up Minecraft of your computer, hit play, and the main menu will show. Click "options > resource packs > open resource packs folder" buttons.
There you will pick the custom resource pack you want to add the sky bison in! (If you haven't had a custom pack before, you can choose one from one of my favorite sites, planetminecraft !)
Once you have picked your pack to edit, and you are in the resourcepacks folder, click *Texture Pack's Folder* > assets > mine craft > textures > entity > cow > *and replace that "cow.png" with this one, containing my version of Appa and family! Do make sure that the file name does not change, and if you have any questions, the planetminecraft link from above has wonderful help sections as well.
Thank you and I hope you enjoy!
*Of course, Minecraft is owned by Mojang and I do not take any credit for "Appa" or 'Nickelodeon's Avatar the Last Airbender' either. The rest of the world's textures in my Minecraft game I downloaded a long time ago from www.planetminecraft.com, DokuCraft Light. You can see the new versions of that texture pack and its creator by clicking here: Doku Craft Link

Hair-Takeover: Art-Wednesday
Ah what a wonderful & busy week it has been! I caught myself looking like this, and laughed in the mirror. A total hair-takeover! So frazzled & giant that it left me feeling a lot like Hermione Granger.

Sculpting Mini-Elephants: An Art-Thursday
Hello! Happy Art-Thursday :)
I was recently reminded how much I love and missed sculpting! An old friend of mine visited, and we reminisced about how we used to make sculpted-creations for each other as gifts! So I was inspired to make her this little guy for old time's sake:
I enjoyed the process so much, that I decided I would create more, even smaller sculptures! My first thought was of a tiny elephant, and how sweet he would be as an animal totem pendant! I thought it might be fun to see my process through the elephant's creation, so without further ado, here it is:
First, I go on my trusty computer to look for reference, this time of asian elephants. I chose asian elephants specifically because I remembered loving their structure and colors. Based on my reference (pictured left), I came up with this quick pen and digital sketch (right) for my elephant pendant:
2. Sculpt
This little guy (pictured left) was my first draft. I used a small bunch of floral wire to bulk his body and give me a good handle to hold him by as I sculpted. I used Super Sculpey polymer clay and a myriad of wood and metal sculpting tools, and my hands to sculpt his body.
Once his sculpt was finished, it was baking time! The middle image shows him at the baking process, and the start of my casting a mold of him. I used Sculpey mold maker.
In the photo on the right, I have some of his family! It was my very first time creating a mold, so the elephant brethren on the right were very roughed out by the mold, and then I took over the rest of the sculpting by hand.
For the necklaces, I add a hook to the raw clay elephants and bake them in the oven already intact. Then it is painting time! I use all acrylic paints, and the (almost) finished product can be seen below! The last finishing touch I'd like to experiment with is adding a varnish to protect the paint further and make him look A+
4. Review
I am always looking for ways to improve my work, and these guys are no exception! I am pretty happy with how they are looking so far, but like I said, I'd like to give them finishing touches. I will definitely experiment with varnish, and I would like to make the next group a little more pudgy in the body, and work on an even smoother surface finish of the sculpt.
I will post an update later with my improvements! But for now, this will conclude our Art-Thursday!
Thank you for reading, and check back next week!

Art Wednesday: An Art Dump
Good evening Art-Wednesday readers!
Before I get too into all the details of my new adventures in artwork, I wanted to catch you all up on my work since I went blog-silent.
My last individual post was in honor of my Great Uncle. Needless to say this was a major factor in my time away from blogging. Since then, I am happy to say I got my art groove back and have worked even harder on my artwork in his memory. He helped (a lot) in funding my art education, and I was never able to express my full gratitude. So, without further ado, here are some of my favorite pieces I have created since then:
I worked on developing a mermaid like character for my science collaboration...

(Click any image to enlarge)
I got back into more frequent doodling...

(Click any image to enlarge)
I tried my hand at Copic Markers for the first time....

And had fun with new ideas!

(Click any image to enlarge)
Well that is all for this Art-Wednesday update. Catch you next week! Thanks!

GDC 2015: A Wonderful Opportunity!
This year I had the wonderful opportunity to go to the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, California! I was invited to join a couple of my Iron Ninja Games teammates, Dave and Lance. I had never been to a GDC before, so I had heard great stories of all the great people and things to learn and see. And my goodness was I still pleasantly surprised!
Thanks to my team, I was able to attend tons of talks, and the variety and wealth of information given was so inspiring! The two presentations that really stood out to me were:
"The Art of Firewatch"
with speaker Jane Ng
This talk was one of the first art talks I attended, and was so well constructed. In addition to showing tons of behind the scenes art development Campo Santo did to create the beautiful "Firewatch", Jane Ng did a lovely job tying in how small developers can use or modify their methods for success in their own games. It was a seamless blend of both types of presentation, and I so appreciated the accessibility of her talk for everyone. I was so glad for such an in-depth art talk, at what I thought was going to be a programming dominated environment. It surprised me in such a positive way, and I wanted to test out their methods as soon as I was out of the conference room.
"A Live Art Demonstration of Creating Worlds through Design Thinking"
with speaker Feng Zhu
This was the very last talk I went to, and I am so glad that even after an exhausting, mind boggling few days, I still made it to this one. For many of the same reasons I loved the fire "Firewatch" talk, I also really enjoyed Feng Zhu's talk on Design Thinking. While Jane Ng talked a lot about teams of artists achieveing beautiful art from beginning to end of the visual development process, Feng Zhu's talk spoke more to the individual artist and freelancers working for games, with a focus in the beginning stages of development. He talked about his experiences working for large studios and indie, and he impressed upon us all of the importance of creative thinking to better generate interesting, unique visuals. His style was so much more casual, like a personal mentor, which reminded me of my favorite professors from college. He showed us a phenomenal live demonstration of digital painting as well, and it was very informative to watch him work.
There were so many awesome talks in between, but if I wrote about all of them I fear I would end up with a novel instead of a blog post! As a whole, the conference was such an invaluable experience. I went to talks that expanded my knowledge of the game industry, of how the combined skills of programmers and artists on a team can create such unique things in games and problem solve together. I met tons of other enthusiastic creatives, and could not have loved the environment of positive, creative thinking and perseverance more. A truly inspired group of people to surround yourself with. Everyone should experience it at least once if you are interested in the field!
